BMW X1 Compact Crossover Starts at $31,545, U.S.-Only 300-HP Model Coming

U.S. pricing has been announced for the BMW X1 compact crossover, which finally recieves its official U.S. unveiling at the New York auto show this week. The smallest of BMW’s Sport Activity Vehicles (SAVs) will start at $31,545 including destination, and be available in three different models with two engine choices when it goes on sale in fall 2012.

Of the three models destined for the U.S., two will be powered by BMW’s N20 turbocharged 240-hp, 260-lb-ft 2.0-liter I-4, including the rear-drive sDrive28i and all-wheel-drive xDrive28i. The X1 sDrive28i will start at $31,545, while the xDrive28i will start at $33,245. Both models get BMW’s Auto Start-Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration functions, which increase efficiency of the four-cylinder engine. A third model, the U.S.-exclusive X1 xDrive35i, will get BMW’s tried-and-true turbocharged 300-hp, 300-lb-ft 3.0-liter I-6, and will be priced starting at $39,345.

The X1, which is built at BMW’s Leipzig plant in Germany, will receive slight changes when it arrives in the U.S. for model year 2013. The headlights are redesigned, and feature the classic LED halo rings around the optional HID projector lamps, along with strips of LED accent lights within the housing.  The interior was also retouched with newly designed surfaces, like electroplated trim surrounding the gear selector and center console cupholders, and a high-gloss black finish applied to the air vent trim.
